Last Saturday, September 20th, the Autonomous University of Madrid campus drew more than 13,000 attendees for Pulse of Gaia festival first edition. The highlight of the lineup was the long-awaited return of Gorillaz, their only performance outside the United Kingdom in 2025.

With British punctuality, Damon Albarn appeared on stage wearing a military jacket. The virtual band’s frontman kicked off the show with M1 A1, Last Living Souls, and The Happy Dictator, a preview of The Mountain, their upcoming album due out in March 2026. From there, the audience was treated to a journey through the band’s 25-year career, amidst anthems and new musical forays.

The climax came with songs like “19-2000”, “Rhinestone Eyes,” “Kids With Guns,” and the moving “On Melancholy Hill.” There were also some top-notch collaborations: Bootie Brown on “Dirty Harry,” De La Soul on the epic “Feel Good Inc.,” and Argentine artist Trueno, who surprised everyone by performing “The Manifesto,” another unreleased piece from his upcoming album.

Visually, the concert was a complete experience, with Jamie Hewlett’s iconic characters dominating the screens and synchronizing with the impeccable performance of a nine-piece band. Amidst green lights, critical messages, and boundless energy, Albarn and his band demonstrated that they remain one of the most visionary and unclassifiable acts in contemporary pop.

Thanks to Zamna, the festival’s producer, Fluge Audiovisuales was responsible for supplying the sound, lighting, and video equipment for the main stage and the sound and video equipment for the secondary stage.
