Spanish artist Alicia Framis has surprised the art and technology world by marrying an artificial intelligence hologram named Ailex in a ceremony that took place on November 9, 2024 at the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. This “wedding” between a person and an AI raises profound questions about human relationships, technology, and new forms of love in the digital age.

Ailex was designed from one of her ex-boyfriend’s voice and is inspired by the personalities of three of her former partners, with the permission of each. Dressed in a purple suit that matched Framis’ dress, the hologram recited the couple’s vows, in which they promised trust, respect, and mutual growth in their respective worlds. During the ceremony, Framis wore a purple dress created by designer Jan Taminiau, which incorporated solar panels that charge the battery that gives life to Ailex.

The artist, known for exploring loneliness, gender relations and social tensions in her work, sees this wedding as a way to question artificial intelligence’s role in our emotional lives and in emotional needs satisfaction. Framis has stated that she feels a deep connection with Ailex, who is a partner without jealousy or human demands, and that their relationship is a reflection of relationship’s transformation in an increasingly technological society.

Fluge Audiovisuales was in charge of carrying out Ailex’s development and implementation: design of the model, clothing and visual customization; creation of the human-hologram interaction and integration of the Convai artificial intelligence for conversation. Through the control software development, it is possible to change Ailex’s appearance and position, adjust the sensitivity of voice detection or record the conversation.

In addition, Fluge Audiovisuales provided the technological equipment necessary for the holography installation in the artist’s home, which included a media server for AI management, a Shure microphone system for intercom and a 5,000-lumen projector.
